Project Gutenberg is a library of over 75,000 free eBooks Choose among free epub and Kindle eBooks, download them or read them online. You will find the world's great literature here, with focus on older works for which U.S. copyright has expired. Thousands of volunteers digitized and diligently proofread the eBooks, for you to enjoy. The purpose of Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation is to encourage the voluntary creation and distribution of electronic books. Project Gutenberg Self-Publishing’s purpose is to create a cloud service for contemporary writers to share their works with readers. Audio booksAudio books are a great way to enjoy and share literature. Project Gutenberg no longer adds new audio books to the collection, and suggests these audio book resources. These audio books are all freely available and in the public domain in the US. They may be easily played back on computers, tablets, mobile phones, and other devices. They may be shared non-commercially, without limitation except in countries where the printed source is still copyrighted. All of the sources listed below are digitizations of texts from Project Gutenberg.
Project Gutenberg Origins
For the next Millennium the digital press will change the literary world as much for modern times as did books from the Gutenberg Press. In 1971 Michael Hart founded Project Gutenberg, a global coordinated volunteer effort to digitize and distribute the great works of history. Mission Statement: "The Purpose of Project Gutenberg is to encourage the creation and distribution of electronic books." Until now, Project Gutenberg has focused mostly on the re-creation of classic literature from paper books into digital books rather than the distribution of new authors and material. We have spent as much of our time on finding books and doing copyright research as we have on eBook creation and distribution. This Self-Publishing Portal is our first project focusing solely on distribution rather than creation.
